Dartmouth Recreation
2011 Spring Programs

        General Information

No refunds will be given unless class is cancelled.
All classes are subject to sufficient enrollment.
Programs will be held at the Dartmouth Recreation Center (former smith neck school), 487 Smith Neck Road, Dartmouth, unless otherwise stated.
If Dartmouth Public Schools close due to inclement weather, no classes will be held on that day.  If the class must be cancelled during the weekend, you will receive a call from the instructor.
All Dartmouth Recreation Instructors undergo a CORI background check by the State Criminal History Systems Board prior to teaching any class.

        Wicked Cool Crime Scene Investigators

Kids become the forensic scientist in this six-week course and use real crime-solving techniques to find the guilty party in this intriguing whodunit.  They analyze the evidence – fingerprints, handwriting, hair and even mysterious substances to figure out who should stand trial.

        Wicked Cool Art – Chibi Manga

Chibi Manga is a great way for kids to learn the basics of figure-drawing through cute and cuddly characters.  Kids are given step-by-step coaching so that they can draw figures in a recognizable manga style and then they invent their own.

        Dance/Movement Class    

Come join this exciting six-week dance/movement class.  The class will begin with a fun, creative warm-up and then the~students will be given creative challenges to solve such as working with a partner to show positive and negative space.~ The movements created during this section of the class~are often incorporated into the dance they will learn.~ During the choreography portion, the students learn dances such as hip hop, dances from a time in history such as the 1950's, and many other dance styles.~ There is always something fun going on in class that each student will enjoy.  Instructed by Christine Piscitelli.

Time:  4:30-5:30 P.M. (age 5-8)  -   5:30-6:30 P.M. (age 9-13)

        “Hairspray” Musical Theatre

Come join in on the fun of learning how to take part in a musical theatre performance.  Children will learn the basics of putting together a production.  In this class, boys and girls will audition for a role in the musical “Hairspray”.  This 45-minute performance has been rewritten along the theme of the original musical.  Children will sing, dance and act their way into a world of excitement.  Costumes are encouraged, but not necessary.  At the end of the ten-week session, the children will have a performance of their hard work!  Instructed by Aly Pereira.

        Tai Chi & Qigong Program

This program is a wonderful way of learning balance, improving coordination, increasing strength and promoting good health in one’s body.  The movements are done slowly without any strain or tension.  Both are excellent load bearing exercises and are considered as forms of moving meditation.  The instructor Colman Fink has been involved with martial arts for over forty years.

        Karate for Kids

The eight-week Karate for Kids program is an excellent way for children to learn about confidence, discipline, respect, focus and self-esteem. Through the practice of Karate, students can improve their physical fitness, learn self-defense and develop better body coordination.  The instructor Colman Fink is a 4th degree black belt and has been involved with martial arts for over 40 years.  Further details about Colman can be found on his Facebook page http://goo.gl/PAZ0y

        Cheer – Tumble Classes         

Lindsey Stasz and Dana Cruz will be instructing a six-week cheer-tumble program for children ages 6-18.  This class is designed to give your child the opportunity to build cheer and tumble skills or build on skills they already have acquired.  For the safety of your children, class size is limited to 15 participants accepted on a first come first serve basis.

Date:  April 25 – May 31
Time:  5:30-6:30 P.M.  (ages 6-10)  -  6:45-7:45 P.M.  (ages 11-18)
Location: Dartmouth Middle School gymnasium
Age:     6-18
