2011 Summer Programs

Welcome to Dartmouth Recreation.  In this brochure you will find a variety of summer programs for all age groups. It is the intent of the Recreation Commission to continue to develop new classes and expand our seasonal program offerings.  If you have any ideas for new programs or are interested in instructing a class, please call the Park/Recreation Office.  

General Information

All Dartmouth Recreation Instructors undergo a CORI background check by the State Criminal History Systems Board and are CPR certified.

Programs are offered on a first come basis, all welcome.  Payment is due in full at the time of registration.  No refunds will be given.

Parent packets must be completed in order to register for the Playground/Swim Centers.  Enclosed you will find several forms such as medical, discipline and parental policies to be completed prior to the start of all programs.  In addition a physical exam form from your child’s pediatrician is required; dated within one year of the program start (for playground/swim centers only).  You will not be able to register your child without the Doctor’s form!

        Tennis Lessons

Each participant age 5 & up will be given a one-hour lesson on Monday, Wednesday and Friday or a one and a half-hour lesson on Tuesday and Thursday for a total of seven weeks. Registration sheet and consent form must be filled out completely.

Level Descriptions
Beginner:  No experience to limited experience
Novice:  Knowledge of basic forehand and backhand, Able to hit both forehand and backhand with limited consistency, Limited knowledge of volleys and overheads, Somewhat limited skill in both placement and aim
Intermediate:  Hits forehand and backhand with regular consistency, Good knowledge of volleys and overheads, Good skill with placement and aim, Limited knowledge and experience with serving
Proficient:  Extensive ground strokes skill, Extensive ability with volleys and overheads, Demonstrated knowledge of serving, Advanced placement and aiming techniques, Knowledge of positioning, scoring, and etiquette

        Golf Lessons

Each participant will be given a one-hour small group lesson on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.  Hawthorne Country Club has a dress code; therefore children must dress appropriately:  No jeans or jean shorts, T-shirts, swim wear or gym clothing.  Meet at the North side of the parking lot on the first day.  Clubs will be provided, unless you have your own.  Registration sheet and consent form must be filled out completely.

This week long center offers Sports, Arts & Crafts, Swimming Instruction, Field trips planned every week, as well as, rainy day programs for children.  Safe constructive fun under qualified and friendly supervision.  Enrollment limited to 60 children.  Registration sheet and consent form must be filled out completely.  A copy of your child’s physical must be presented at time of registration.

        Archery

For the beginner or the advanced, this six-class program emphasizes safety while teaching good archery form and technique.  Archers will participate in games and a tournament at the end of the program.  Fee includes use of all needed equipment.  During inclement weather, class will be cancelled and rescheduled.  Instructed by Jill Oliveria of Trader Jan’s Pro Shop.

        “Camp Rock 2” Musical Theatre Class:

Come join in on the fun of learning how to take part in a musical theatre performance. ~Children will learn the basics of putting together a production. ~In this class, boys and girls will audition for a role in the musical "Camp Rock 2." ~This 45 min. performance~has been rewritten along the theme of the original "Camp Rock 2." Children will sing, dance, and act their way into a world of excitement. ~Students should bring snacks, drinks and a lunch. Costumes~are encouraged, but not necessary. ~The performance will take place on Friday, July 15th at 2PM. ~

        Wicked Cool Rocket Science:

Rocket science is a blast for any junior rocketeer!  In the morning, our space scientists will learn about rocket propulsion by building compressed air rockets and rockets that blast off by chemical reactions!  As flight engineers, kids will travel to infinity and beyond while they investigate how rockets get off the ground and soar to the heavens.  In the afternoon, we’ll learn all about the science of flight, and investigate how things fly.  We’ll travel across the solar system and learn about the rocky planets and the gas giants.  We’ll make friends with Newton’s laws of motion and learn why what goes must come down.  Rocket Science with Wicked Cool for Kids will be out of this world!

        Prospectors Mystery Rock Workshop:

You are going to be a Prospector (you know those people who were always looking for gold).~ In this workshop you will get to excavate for valuable gems, fascinating rocks, and some ancient fossils.~ All are yours to keep.~ What hidden wonders will you find?~ The identities of the 10 specimens found in your Mystery Rock have been kept a secret from you.~ You will experience the thrill of discovery, much as prospectors did.~ You will be able to identify each one.~ Your specimens are in a hard clay material the same as prospectors found.~ You will have to get them out without breaking or scratching them.~ That’s not that easy.~ You will get an excavation tool, specimen brush, log book, sorting trays and labels.~ You will, as a Prospector, record the color, both wet and dry texture, and its ability to float for each of the 10 specimens you dig out.~ Make an educated guess with our help to whether each one is a rock, gem, or fossil.~ You will learn from us the exact name and classification.~~We give you~hands-on science prospectors style - fun - educational - exciting.~~

        Engineering and Electricity:

In the morning session Wicked Cool engineers will be put to the task to build things that go.  We’ll be learning about the engineering and design process to build balloon powered cars, balloon hovercrafts, magnet powered cars and more.  We’ll add in some tall towers, new catapults, and balsa bridges for a fun filled week of engineering challenges.  In the afternoon, kids will build basic circuits, and experiment with insulators and conductors.  We’ll use our knowledge of motors and circuits to construct our own “Bristle Bots” and send them to battle.  Each day we’ll build new projects using the Snap Circuit System, where kids can easily configure how to construct sound activated switches, learn about LEDs, and make a flying saucer.  Electrifying!

        Wicked Amazing Art:

A truly engaging art program with imaginative projects that help kids develop their creative streak.  We’ll use different media from collages, watercolors, and wax-resist to printing and sculpture.  Lots of all-new activities for the artistic side of your child.

        Mask Making:

Come join us!  Make a plaster cast mask of your own face and decorate it with your own personal theme.  We will look at masks from many different cultures, artists and traditions for inspiration.  We will also make a second “masquerade” style half mask.  Wear painting clothes!  Instructed by Karen Graca, DMS art department.

        Chemical Magic – Magical Microscopes – Rocks & Minerals:

Learn to make batteries from fruits or potatoes. Make a fantastic crystal tree.~ Work with invisible ink.~ See the happy and sad balls. Work with our powerful magnets.~ Look at our prepared slides using our microscopes.~ Learn about the different types of rocks and minerals from our interesting rock and mineral collection.~ Be a chemical detective.~ Make glob from glue. Use paper chromatography to separate colors. Make dirty pennies turn clean and clean pennies turn green.~ Everything will be explained to you so you can go home having learned some interesting science.~ Hands-on science is the best way to learn.~ Do it the SCIENSATIONAL WAY.~
