Economic Development Self-Assessment

TOWN OF DARTMOUTH UTILIZES

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL

WHAT:                      The Town of Dartmouth utilized Northeastern University’s Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT) which seeks to identify impediments to private investment in communities and strengths that promote economic development.

WHO:                         Multi-disciplinary team made up of the Town Administrator, Planning Director, Director of Development, Finance Committee members, & New Bedford Chamber of Commerce

WHEN:                      Initial assessment in the spring with final analysis completed in the fall

                                WHERE:                               Reviewed entire Town

WHY:                         The purpose of EDSAT is for the Town to build upon economic development assets and overcome challenges. Also, collaboration between public officials and business leaders is formed which leads to creating a business-friendly climate.

RESULTS:                Assets include good infrastructure (public and private utilities), timeliness of approvals, updated website.  Weaknesses include lack of available sites, high rents, and limited available labor

NEXT STEPS:          Promote Town’s assets, collaborate with Chamber of Commerce and local businesses, track available development sites, and perform follow-up marketing with businesses
